Tech City UK about Opportunities for Maltese Startups

While visiting Malta for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2015), Tech city UK CEO Gerard Grech (@gerardgrech) and his colleagues found some time to meet maltese startups and open a dialogue on a possible cooperation with MCA, University of Malta and TAKEOFF business incubator.

It is not a secret that London is one of the major innovation hubs in Europe.  Around 10% of GDP in UK is produced by Digital Business. Out of 40 unicorn companies in Europe – 17 are based in UK, and 13 out of them in London.

Tech City UK works with all the stakeholders to facilitate digital business and innovation in UK and bring startup community infront of the government.

How does Tech City UK facilitate innovation and development of digital businesses?

It focuses on the following key areas:

Providing a physical space, developing talent, attracting investors as well as taking a role in political leadership to mediate between policymakers and entrepreneurs. The goal of the organisation is to insure CEO and founders have a voice in the government, to create policies that facilitate growth and development.

Tech City UK offers a range of programs for startups and founders.

  • Digital business academy – for those who want to start a business. Anyone can take free online courses from the Digital Academy that cover essential topics from sizing up your idea to building a digital business, to mastering your startup finance.
  • Second round accelerator – Future 50 that helps rapidly scaling companies gain IPO and M&A readiness and penetrate new markets. Future 50 alumni and members include Skyscanner, Moo.com, TransferWise,  Shazam and more.

  •  Upscale program – where experienced founders are helping next generation of entrepreneurs (mentors include founders of Skype and Tech Stars).

In cooperation with Tech City UK government has already introduced several initiatives, such as “Coding in Schools” and “Tech Nation Visa Scheme”.
